Working on the computer, Working

New Laptop?

My laptop is having a few problems and I'm ready to just trash the thing. I have to keep the power cable firmly pressed into the hole or it isn't plugged in. The battery has also been lasting only a few minutes, if that. It will register as having 100% with 2+ hours, and then 2 minutes later it will say it only has 7% / five minutes or less remaining. Lastly, one side of the display hinge is broken so I have to keep it at approximately 90 degrees (+/- 10 - 15 degrees) or it will start falling down. I was going to have my dad help me glue on a support but the power cord and battery problem become more prevalent and I decided to just nix the entire thing and get a new laptop.

My current laptop: Intel Pentium III Mobile 1.0GHz, 256MB, nVidia GeForce2 Go, 15", 80GB, CD/DVD reader

The laptop I've spotted on NewEgg: Acer Aspire AS5043WLMi NoteBook AMD Turion 64 ML-32(1.80GHz) 15.4" Wide XGA 512MB DDR333 80GB 4200rpm DVD±R/RW ATI Radeon Xpress 200M Integrated - Retail

There are a couple of concerns I do have with this laptop. My main one that it is a 64-bit CPU and how difficult it will be to get Kubuntu on it, and if I'll have any compatibility problems with talking to a 32-bit system (SSH, X server, NFS, etc). I would suspect not, but I wouldn't mind being assured of that. I'm also wondering if the 3D card is any good or if it's just a piece of junk. Other than that, I like what I see and am very tempted to get it.

Anyway, I'm off to bed now. I had a long drive this evening and have a lot to do tomorrow and in the coming days. C'ya.

Misc

I think it's time to find something other than my jacket to carry my personal items in. And no, I'm still not going to carry a wallet around in my back pocket.

I also wish that Adobe would hurry up with Flash 9 for Linux. I've uninstalled Flash 7 because it kept causing Firefox to bog down and crash, and since there is no Flash 8 for Linux I don't have anything to view flash videos now. This does make browsing a lot faster and less prone to crash, but it also makes it hard to watch any of these videos that members of GameHavoc posts.

I just deposited the last Summer of Code check. I'm going to call NewEgg and see what it will take to either upgrade XP on that laptop to Professional, or getting it off completely and reducing the price. Update: No. Oh well. It's still a nice laptop.

My dad loaned me three hundred dollars to get the struts on the car repaired. I got a few temporary checks while I was at the bank and have put the repayment check in today's mail.

I just got a letter in today's mail that my insurance is going to reimburse me for the eye care I paid for a few months ago, thinking they didn't. Yay. :-)

I ordered the laptop from NewEgg and it looks like I've jumped the gun. The deposit I made earlier (a couple of hours ago) hasn't been officially posted so the credit card linked directly to my account is failing. I hope that isn't the same as a check bouncing with all those charges and what-not... >.>

Bank card daily limit vs laptop purchase

Oooh, now they tell me my debit/credit card has a daily limit of 400$. Ya know, that is as problem when it comes to paying for a 760$ purchase.

Ok, off the phone with them and they're going to raise it to 800$ for this one-time transaction. Good enough for me, I suppose.

I am having second thoughts about this purchase, though. I don't know if I want to deal with the probable headaches of a 64-bit OS, but ... *shrug* Oh well.

Subconciously intentionally late... >.>

There is a very common event and reason I don't get things done. I get distracted very easily. Except, and here's the kicker, most of the time it's not involuntarily or accidentally.

I'll give you a moment to let that sink in.

...

So yeah, I have this tendency to intentionally find or let things distract me from what I should be doing, and often times even want to do. Why? I'm not sure. I'll have to get back to you on that.
