Not part of the herd: Establish more common references
Sometimes I feel like I'm the only person in the entire country who actively dislikes Family Guy, Futurama, American Dad, South Park, and numerous others, and doesn't care much either way about Star Wars (the originals).
If you like them, okay, no problem, go ahead and watch them. But when practically everything that comes out of someone's mouth is a reference to one of those shows, I've got nothing to go on and we may as well be speaking a different language.
So people, learn to diversify. Don't speak just one language, or one cultural reference. Talk about science, fantasy, math, economics, or something. Just go broader than a few comedy shows.
