Attach or link to PDF resume?
Does anyone know if it's acceptable to link to a resume in an email rather than attach it, or is it best just to attach it anyway? The resume in question is a PDF approximately 236.5 KB in size. (That's a little under a quarter of a MB)

So far my email text looks something like this:

Dear ,

I would like to apply for the PHP/MySQL job you have posted at Monster.com. A copy of my resume is available online in PDF format at:
http://www.zimzat.com/files/resume.pdf

Sincerely,
Russell Lee

In the one I sent with the resume attached it looked like this:

Dear Brian Parsons,

I am interested in the PHP Developer job position you posted at Monster.com. I believe I have the skills needed to fulfill the position and have attached a PDF version of my resume.

Sincerely,
Russell Lee

I dunno... can you make the file smaller?

Compressing it only cuts off about 30 KB, and sending it as a .zip file will set off more virus flags than a .pdf would.

As a Word or Open Office file it's only 8 or 15 KB, but Windows doesn't have the font I put it in and it looks horrible rendered in Times New Roman.

In the corporate world, a 256k attachment isn't a big deal at all. The guy is going to read it connected to the LAN and he won't even notice the size.

Personally, I would embelish your cover letter a bit more, so you stand out. Remember that monster positions sometimes garner hundreds if not thousands of replies, many of them just junk, and it is hard to sift the wheat from the chafe.

something like...

Dear XXXX,

I would like to speak with you regarding the PHP Developer position you recently posted at Monster.com. My knowledge of open source technology, the PHP language and relevent web technologies makes me an excellent match for this opportunity. Please review my attached resume in PDF format. Other formats are available upon request.

Thank you for taking the time to review my resume, and I hope to speak with you soon. I may be contacted via e-mail at XXX@YYY.com or via telephone at (XXX) YYY-ZZZZ.

Sincerely,

....

Wow, thanks.

I wanted to talk with you earlier because you seem to be a good source of know-how for this kind of thing, but you were away so I figured the next best thing would be a LiveJournal post.

I was planning on speaking with my sister and/or brother on how to embellish the cover letter but neither were available at the time either. I really appreciate the example you gave and am tempted to use it as-is, with only information changes, but probably should mix it up just a wee bit.

Thanks!

No problem.

*stares blankly at the sample*

I can't think of a way to change it without making it sound less professional or accurate. x_x

Eh, I hope you don't mind. Do you? o.O
