Summer of Code - down the drain
I think I'm just going to give up on the Summer of Code idea this year. I may try again next year, but I don't think so.

As you all know, I was going to apply to the Gallery project for the MPTT (Modified Preorder Tree Traversal) idea. I wrote up that really nice letter in the summer-gallery list but didn't get a reply. I took my case to the development channel on IRC and asked about my question. One of the core developers gave me some links to a previous discussion they had about MPTT. He also advised me that there were already several high-quality applications for that idea and suggested I find something else. Last year they had ~260 applications yet could only accept 10. Assuming only 10% of those applications were "high-quality" that still leaves 26 people fighting for the same spots. This year they only have the capability to accept about 5 applications, and if time is any indicator then they're going to have even more than 260 applications.

I may go ahead and fill out the application and apply anyway, but I highly doubt they'll pick me. If they do, great. If they don't, oh well.

Regardless, I'm going to have my sister take me to Staffmark Monday to apply for a summer internship at Nucor. I think I have a lot better chances of getting a job there than with the SoC.
