Lacking pride
Someone reminded me that this weekend is pride weekend here in Las Vegas. I think they were trying to create some sort of rapport with me, but they also remarked negatively about someone else scheduling a bowling night during some pride festivities this weekend. They failed completely to get my interest, and in fact have further distanced themselves from my interest.

To be perfectly honest I don't like pride. I find it to be self-centered and pointless. Most people who are interested in it are more focused on the sexual side of the sexuality and I honestly don't care about that aspect of being gay enough to make it a primary focus. I'm comfortable with who I am and I'm not trying to hide it. If it becomes pertinent to those around me then they know. I'm pretty sure most, if not all, of my coworkers know so I really don't care.

That isn't to say everyone involved in pride is wrong or that everything about it is bad, as there are some groups which try to do good within it. It's just that those are the minority and not what many people going to it care about. They may mention it in defense or justification, but often it's just an excuse to them. Like the alcoholic who gets drunk every night, starts a bar fight half the time, and beats their spouse up when they go home, yet considers themselves a good person because they go to church on Sunday.

I think Dan Savage got it about right in his chapter on Pride in Skipping Towards Gomorrah.

I haven't read it. Based on his Wikipedia article and a review of the book at gaybookreviews.info it does sound like we share similar views on a number of things.
