TV Ad @ Outback
The TV at Outback had an ad for a Christian music album called "I Can Only Imagine". Does that strike anyone else as a little sarcastic?

How is that sarcastic?

To say "I can only imagine" about something means that that person doesn't have any actual experience with it but can imagine what it is like. To say you can only imagine when it comes to religion makes it sound like you don't believe whatever the religion says is true.

I don't know which song they were referring to with the title "I Can Only Imagine" or the subject of that song. Making it the title of the album without a subject... *shrugs* See above?

So not really so much sarcastic as contradictory?

I do know a Christian song with that title. It's imagining the day that the singer gets to walk side by side with their god. In order to have actual experience with this... the person will have to be dead. Therefore, they can only imagine it and anticipate it.

Faith: n. Belief that does not rest on logical proof or material evidence.

It's what religion is all about.

Here are the lyrics.

I almost get sick whenever I see that commercial. All of those songs annoy the piss out of me. I think it's the whole focus on "Worship". Rather than living a good life (not to say that one can't do both but these types are often quite judgmental) and being kind to one's neighbors (no matter how far away), fundies seem to thrive on escape through religious entertainment and lording it over the rest of us. In the video, all the singers look so pious, so enthralled - it's sickening. These same people would probably view as primitive and unenlightened the religious behaviors of devote Hindus but it's the same thing in both cases.

I'm sorry if that doesn't make much sense. I've thought a lot about this subject over the years and make a lot of assumptions from which I jump and write things that probably require more of an explanation than either of us have time for.
