Run-in with people asking for money

Something really interesting happened when I decided to stop at Tropical Smoothie after dropping off some Pot Roast for my co-worker and his wife who just had a baby on Friday. A lady with two kids in tow stopped me to ask for a few bucks, that her card stopped working at the ATM, and was trying to get the money for a cab ride home. I told her it would take more than a few bucks to get far in a cab ride, so she said she was also trying to get her kids something to eat while she was out.

I'm not one to give money to anyone, so I offered to buy them something from in Tropical Smoothie (and eventually the pizza place next door to it). She had offered to take down my cell phone to repay me but didn't have a pen, so I told her not to worry about it. I also offered her my phone to call the card company (Chase) and for some reason she said that if they would ask for her social security number then she had better wait until she got home anyway since she doesn't memorize it. Excuse me? She doesn't memorize her social security number? Big red flag.

I bailed after I paid for a bottle of juice from Tropical Smoothie and a couple of slices of pizza and a small drink from the pizza place.

Total scammer. You did the right thing by only agreeing to buy food.

Yeah. I ignore the ones in the middle of the street with the signs. Especially if they say "God Bless". I understand why they do it, my company does similar, but it's still annoying.

I think I posted about this but a few months back we were driving home and a person in the median had a sign that said "Blah Blah Blah Etc" and we laughed our asses off. It was totally working for him, and if we'd been in the turn lane I probably would have given him some money just for cleverness/originality/honesty.

Literally "Blah Blah Blah Etc"? Haha, yeah, that probably would have gotten a few points from me as well. Maybe a dollar. I've seen a few signs that were interesting, although none that I can think of off-hand.

Nice.

I had a guy one time ask me if I had change for some amount of currency he had. He handed me less then what I handed him, but tried to do it quickly, and then when I was walking away he chased me down with a buddy of his and claim my bill was counterfeit. Then he took his money back, but kept mine and told me to scram before he beat the shit outta me.

And I'm still pissed about falling for that.

Even though she was obviously a dirtbag, know that you probably got those kids their first food of the day. People like that use kids as accessories, and forget they need to eat and such.

Thanks.

Considering it was about 6pm, that's kind of sad to think. They didn't seem too bad off, and they acted like normal kids just busy in their own little world. *shrug* Oh well.

You have a good heart. Who knows what her deal is. And chances are you'll forget all about that Smoothie and pizza in a week or so. The kids, however, will not.

*hugs
