August Travel Plans
I've finalized travel plans for August.

2010-08-02: Plane to Chicago, IL
2010-08-06: Train to Newbern, TN
2010-08-09: Train to New Orleans, LA
2010-08-13: Plane to Las Vegas, NV

I haven't decided for sure yet, but I'm considering getting bags for travel on the Motorcycle after that. That would mean:
2010-08-30: Motorcycle to Atlanta, GA (four days @ 8 hours per day)
2010-09-03 to 05: Dragon*Con in Atlanta, GA

After that? Find/Goto a new source of income.

It's a train stop a lot closer to where my brother and sister live than the closest commercial airport (2 hours).

No. That's part of my future considerations. I need to see if I can get some water-proof bags for my specific motorcycle in sufficient size. The only route I've thought about so far is following Google Maps to get there before the 3rd of September.

Hmm, yes. It could also detour through Salt Lake City to say Hi to scixual, pass back down by Boulder to wave at grubbybastard, chat with amnewsboy in Kansas City, maybe rekindle with greypaw in St. Louis, detour again through Dyersburg, TN to crash at my brother's place, or detour over to Cincinnati to talk about the good old days with romeohotel. All before finally making it to Atlanta.

Have you done any multi-day road trips on your motorcycle? If so, how far do you go in a day?

Having just completed a motorcycle trip from Chicago to Niagara Falls and back, I think your attempt to ride for 8 hours a day is unobtainable. Even on a cruiser, my tolerance for a bout of continuous riding was about 160 miles or 2.5 hours. I could do that twice a day, for about 5 hours of riding or 320 total miles .... but it wasn't pleasant. Realistically, you should probably figure on 4 hours of riding a day (2 in the morning, 2 in the afternoon) or thereabouts.

I figured as much. :-) I remembered a little about your motorcycle plans from a few tidbits here and there.

Hmm... yeah, that's something I haven't really tested out much yet.

For a few months back in Las Vegas a group I was in would go on a motorcycle run every other Sunday or so. Usually each leg was about 1 to 3 hours.

Once I went on a motorcycle run with some coworkers to Furnace Creek, CA. That was about 120 miles one-way, and we did a round trip. That one was alright.

Otherwise, I guess I'll find out once I get on the road. If I do the stops I figured in an above comment I may only have to do 5 or 6 hours a day, but then it'll take over a week to make the full trip. *shrug*

I've done Furnace Creek and back in one day (the map link there appears to have re-routed itself since I created it? I'm fairly sure, at least). That was a little long, trying to keep pace with the others and with some of the hair-pin turns, but otherwise seemed like an okay ride.

I've also done a day trip to Beatty, NV on the motorcycle. That only went south because I stupidly followed a jeep and car onto sand and dropped the bike once on the way off it (after they had left me behind trying to navigate off the sand). After that incident it was hot and I was a bit unnerved.
