Mesmerizing Babies Everywhere
I don't know what it is about their baby daughter, but she is absolutely fascinated with me. Practically anything I do is greeted with a huge grin and a mesmerized stare. I've gotten this kind of reaction from babies before so it's not surprising, but that was generally just in passing. This is on-going. We're at day five now and just seeing me on the sofa in the morning while she's eating breakfast is like the second or third happiest moment in her entire life. I direct a "Hi", a wave, or a smile in her direction and she's off again.

(... Wait, that sounds an awful lot like the Unicorns in Mercedes Lackey's The Five Hundred Kingdoms series. o.O)

The odd thing is that my sister's baby doesn't react this way, yet my oldest sister's oldest kid did when he was a baby some 14 to 15 years ago. On the other hand I don't feel all that close to my sister's baby. She keeps trying to force her on me, like "This is your niece, now hold her!" She thinks it's exciting and grand, but ... I don't. *shrug*

*shrugs again* We'll see if she's still doing that by the time I leave Las Vegas on Monday.

I've found that there is a mental switch that some people have. It is either OMG BABY! HOW CUTE LET ME HOLD IT! AWWWWWWWWWWWW! or :meh:

I am firmly in the first camp and I know most people are in the other. I'm not sure it is possible to easily switch.

I bet she will act that way with you for a while:)

That's okay. They're not thrusting her on me, and she's not overly fussy about everything.

I'm probably 3/4 of the way toward :meh: about babies. They're humans, albeit small and undeleveloped at this point, so I give them respect like I would any other intelligent thing. But I don't think they're uber-cute, so I'm not going to fawn over them for hours on end. The most I can sustain interest in an individual baby I'm not tasked with taking care of is, say, half an hour.

Kids are mind-readers. They can tell when you like them, and when you like someone they like. Or when you're comfortable in the situation.

If they're mind readers then I'm not sure what they like about my mind. That I have very simplistic logic chains? That I'm usually not frenzied about everything? Or my mind just tastes like cotton candy?

... I want some cotton candy now.

That you're comfortable and happy there. And your mind tastes more like Neapolitan ice cream.
