Dirty Little Secret: G2 Upgrade
I have a dirty little secret that came home to roost a lot sooner than I expected. It's really a good thing, but it may not have been the wisest decision given the current situation. A few days I was financially strapped, so I had to pull out of my retirement fund to cover for the next month (including rent for a place to stay), but I also took a little more than was probably necessary just so I could upgrade my primary phone from the G1 to the G2.

The G2 arrived only two or three days after I placed the order, which is at least 6 days prior to the expected 'have by' date. I've been playing with it quite a bit and found it to be a sufficient replacement of the G1 and EVO I was carrying around. The physical keyboard is a little stunted, what with only three rows of letters and compacting the numbers (a silly design if you ask me), and reversing the ALT and SHIFT locations from a normal keyboard, but the physical key layout is fairly reasonable and hasn't taken too much to translate from the original. The screen size is smaller than the EVO but longer than the G1 so a nice compromise. There is very little noticeable performance lag with the latest Android 2.2 (which is mostly stock, rather than heavily and needlessly customized like the EVO).

To end this 'review' here's an amusing quote I found in the user's manual:
Tips For Safety:
  • If your phone rings and you discover it's in the back seat, do NOT crawl over the seat to answer it while driving.

it's now illegal to use a phone while driving in Ontario unless its hands free

I find the banning of hand-held phones amusing, and a little annoying. Studies have also shown the majority of the distraction is the fact you're trying to multitask a conversation (which will include thinking about facts, remembering things, and making stuff up). *shrug* Oh well.

only thing that really happens now is people hold their phones lower and text which I think is even more dangerous

Not just think it's more dangerous, proven it's more dangerous. They already have studies out that show states which have a "no texting while driving" law have more accidents than those that don't during the same time period.
