This is a new paradigm for me, one where employees show employers their poker hand – particularly in an “at-will” state like Georgia.

I did have a few people who advised against telling them. Ultimately, though, I felt more comfortable simply telling them and letting them decide if it was financially better to leave me as a contractor full time or to take me on as a permanent employee full time.

My brother said that his company had never fired anyone who simply wanted to stay as an hourly contractor.

Other deciding factors were that they really need me for at least another month or two, and right now I'm financially stable enough to go without a job for at least a couple of months while looking for another job (and I have no doubt I would be able to find something in that time or less).

Most of all I believe in being honest and upfront about intentions. It was never my intention to stay in Atlanta for more than 2 or 3 years, but it wasn't until about a month ago that I decided on a reasonable date to move. I don't want to wait any longer than that before starting another stage of my life.
