True. :)

Garbage Collection only affects things that are no longer being used, or have been marked for collection. So for things in the fridge (in-scope) to go out of scope, either the fridge needs an automatic freshness or expiration check (sweeeet...) or someone has to manually remove them. XD

I usually put it to the side, in the 'recycle bin', until I decide that six months after the "best by" date is probably too much.

Deleting old fridge stuff is good, that way you don't have to defrag it on grocery day.

If it is there too long deleting may not be enough. You may have to wipe it.
