Quotes of Random Conversation
At Ben's Parents house while cooking. I was talking about how recipes should be open to encourage more use and innovation in the kitchen, like what open source software does for computers.

Ben's Mom: "Did he just compare cooking to programming?"
Ben: "Yes, he's a nerd. This has been established."

My grandmother and grandfather had recipes like this; you could say they were 'extensively commented'. Also, my grandfather had a tendency to write his parametrically, specifying different proportions for larger batches, to account for differences in cooking temperature, cooking penetration, and oven power.

I liken it more to chemistry than programming, but certainly the recipes could be considered, er, procedural.

That would be an interesting cookbook to gander. My parents, for the few recipes they had (a big box full, yet only used about half a dozen of them), did a little of that, but only for 2x or ½ servings.

The comparison was more about the philosophical concepts behind open source software than the nature of how it works. In that regard I definitely agree that cooking, and especially baking, tends more to chemistry.
