It is significantly more complicated that earlier versions. I do like the social policies, though even with the occasional lock-out (no freedom and authoritarianism together) they don't seem to completely mesh. They're useful, however, and I often prioritize getting those as quickly as possible.

The social policies are interesting, although I do agree they don't necessarily seem to mesh. Maybe it's because I have so many cities (half a dozen?) but by 200 turns I've only got 2-3 fully fleshed out. A social win seems nearly impossible, but then I'm usually too busy defending myself and feeding my citizens and trying to get them to not be unhappy to focus on culture.

I saw a list of things that were removed in Civ 5 and realized they took out a lot of complexity too (from a poll asking if people think Civ 5 has been dumbed down).
