The Autobiography of Russell
Life from a different perspective
In the defense of an opinion
Sometimes I feel like I have to defend having an opinion, or the expression of that opinion. It doesn't mean I'm trying to tell other people how to live their lives or what to do. We may not agree, but that doesn't mean either of us are wrong.

If you do want to tell me I'm personally wrong then come at me with facts, reasons, and logic. I'll listen, I'll consider your points (even between foaming lips of rage), and I'll weigh them against my own evaluation of what I think is important. If I still disagree, though, then we need to agree to disagree. If you continue to press your point, though, I won't stay around.

Belittling my opinion is never okay.

Current Mood: blah blah

Sounds like this is a reaction to a specific recent event, perhaps? Sounds frustrating. :(

A few minor incidents and a couple of major incidents. The minor ones yesterday really triggered it, though.

I was playing games at a local meetup with some folks. As per usual in a game you might say things like "I would", often given in a friendly manner. Unfortunately it wasn't taken quite so well, and the rebuttal was very matter-of-factly "I know what I'll do", basically telling me to step off. There were a couple of other things that happened where the role was reversed but they insisted on saying where I went wrong.

The big thing, though, involved Nick. Belittling my opinion, not accepting that I can judge things for myself, essentially being told what to do or not do (For example, if I want to concern myself with the fact that the landlord hasn't deposited my check for the first month of rent on time then that's my prerogative).

I disagree that I belittled your opinion or told you what to do regarding the rent check. Here's a transcript of that part of the conversation:

1:18:40 PM Russell Lee: I can't claim to have had anything quite so exciting happening around here. My landlord has yet to deposit my checks for July's rent and utilities; I've put on my calendar to call her tomorrow.
11:18:52 PM Nick Barnard: to deposit the checks?
11:19:28 PM Russell Lee: ...?
11:19:36 PM Nick Barnard: you're going to call her tomorrow to ask her about the checks?
11:19:45 PM Russell Lee: Yes. Why they haven't been deposited.
11:19:55 PM Nick Barnard: umm. why do you care?
11:20:39 PM Russell Lee: Because she could claim I didn't send them (right or wrong), and file for eviction. Just filing for eviction allows her the option to charge a full month of rent.
11:20:51 PM Nick Barnard: fair enough.
11:21:05 PM Russell Lee: And if they really did get lost in the mail I'd rather know sooner rather than later.
11:22:09 PM Russell Lee: Rent checks getting lost in the mail is usually held against the tenant, especially if they weren't certified.
11:22:46 PM Nick Barnard: eh, never had issues with it
11:23:03 PM Nick Barnard: if I did I'd probably have my bank bill pay send a check.
11:23:04 PM Russell Lee: I don't like my obligations not being fulfilled; I take things like rent, utilities, and what-have-you very seriously.
11:23:31 PM Nick Barnard: so there is a third party in there to vouch for the fact that yes, it was mailed..
11:23:48 PM Russell Lee: I also emailed her on Tuesday afternoon.
11:24:01 PM Nick Barnard: so in my book this is sweating small stuff.
11:24:03 PM Nick Barnard: but oh well.
11:24:05 PM Russell Lee: I asked if it were feasible to deposit it directly to a bank account.
11:24:54 PM Russell Lee: I think we've already established that your playbook is vastly different than mine.
11:25:01 PM Nick Barnard: yup
11:25:02 PM Nick Barnard: we have

Seattle itself is nice, just gotta deal with some drama already from a few people I'm meeting here. I'm thinking things will cool down or otherwise get resolved within the next couple of weeks, if not sooner.
