  • 13:13 On my way to an interview I realized I actively avoid wearing 'nice' clothes. But why? They usually trade look nice for feel uncomfortable.

How did the interview go?

I think it went reasonably well, but not what I would call aced.

Unfortunately certain people/companies are messing up certain terms in the industry causing confusion and mixed expectations. For instance, I [used to] call myself a "Web Developer" in order to stay away from the page design aspects. Within the above group this is no longer true, and in fact complete opposite. To them a "web designer" just throws together some mockups in Photoshop and calls it a day, and it's left up to the web developer to create the actual visual representation using HTML/CSS. On top of that a lot of people still give PHP a second-class place when it comes to development, as if it can't handle any business logic.

Ultimately I'm severely concerned that positions at these places become a glorified template creation and variable population job, leaving actual software engineering problems to the "middle tier" in another language (such as Java). I expressed my concerns at the interview and that CSS design, especially cross browser compatibility (IE!), was my weak point, but I didn't get very specific answers as to job expectations ("We have some people that are strong in this, and some who are strong in that", but did not make it clear what I would be expected of or as to the depth of the system in which I would be working with).

I'm holding out hope for better indication, but ... *shrug*
