The Autobiography of Russell
Life from a different perspective
Time for a change: Move, career, goals, purpose
There are many things in life that I am undecided about. Most of them are by choice or by default, like choosing what type of cutting tool to use in surgery. I don't know enough about the subject to make an informed decision and so I choose to be undecided by default. I could educate myself on surgery practices and then I could choose which tool is right for the job, but how likely am I to need that knowledge or am I to practice it? Very unlikely, and so I leave the subject alone.

The things that I'm not undecided about are germane to what I do often and the things I've studied up on. Best programming practices, advantages and disadvantages of different methods, etc. These are things I have informed myself on and choose to have an opinion on one way or another. It's my bread and butter.

There are some things in life that I am undecided about which I would rather not be; I want answers. Unfortunately these are, more often than not, things where there is no one right answer or the right answer can change and that other people can't answer for me. Personal matters, like what my purpose in life is, what I should do next, where I should live next, what I want out of a relationship, and so forth.

These questions have plagued me lately and I want answers. Again unfortunately, I have none. All I know is that it's time for change and it's time to start looking for new answers. My goal at this juncture is to start looking at housing situations in the surrounding area and other parts of the country and begin planning to move. I want to be moved out of here before my two year mark at this location. I don't know where to find any other answers right now but I'll be on the look out for that "ah ha!" moment that fills in the blanks again.

Current Mood: contemplative contemplative

As you say, while you can certainly gain insight from others, ultimately there is no one right answer (even for a singular person these answers can change over time) and these are things you can only figure out for yourself.

That said, if you ever want to talk about this kind of stuff I'm here.

I'll probably take you up on that some time soon. Whenever I've brought the subject up to others before I just get empty words of understanding or pointed in the same direction everyone else goes (which in this instance means something along the lines of suck it up, put in your 40 hours, and go home; not very useful).

I understand people can't tell me where to work, what hobbies to do, or where to live, but there's pros and cons to any decision and there are always options that one person can't think of by themselves if they've never been exposed to them, and those are the things I want to know. I can make an informed decision, but I don't know what all the options are for everything.
